April 20, 2001 - Equal Pay Day

Equal Pay Day, April 3, 2001, is an event organized by the National Committee of Pay Equity to symbolize the day that the average woman’s wages catch up to the average man’s wages from the previous calendar year.  The average working woman makes only 73 cents for every dollar earned by her male counterparts.

Equal Pay Day events were held throughout the nation in April 3, 2001.  These events raised people’s awareness that the average working women must work slightly over 15 months to earn what the average man would earn in 12.

The Nebraska Commission on the Status of Women observed the day by distributing stickers and slices of apple pie.  While everyone enjoyed their delicious slice of pie, the stickers were worn to show the serious, continuing inequity between women’s wages and men’s wages.

The Nebraska Equal Opportunity Commission observed Equal Pay Day by having its commissioners and Executive Director sign an Equal Pay Resolution at its April 20, 2001 Commission Meeting.

RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The Equal Pay Act was passed in 1963 in the 88th Session of the U.S. Congress and is the law of the land; and

WHEREAS, The Equal Pay Act was enacted to prohibit discrimination in wages between males and females because women continue to suffer the consequences of inequitable pay differentials; and

WHEREAS, Differentials in wages based on sex constitute an unfair method of compensation, prevent maximum utilization of available labor resources, and prevent females from achieving economic self-sufficiency; and

WHEREAS, Differentials based on sex reveal that Nebraska's working women earn 71 cents compared to each dollar a man earns; and

WHEREAS, Fair pay strengthens the security of families today and enhances the Nebraska economy.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the Commissioners and staff of the Nebraska Equal Opportunity Commission hereby recognize April 3, 2001 as EQUAL PAY DAY, and hereby acknowledge and encourage employers to effectuate a concerted effort to raise the wages of women to that of men throughout Nebraska.

Signed on Behalf of the Commission, April Twentieth in the year of our Lord, Two Thousand One.
