May 19, 2000 - Equal Pay Day

RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The Equal Pay Act was passed in 1963 in the 88th Session of the U.S. Congress and is the law of the land; and

WHEREAS, The Equal Pay Act was enacted to prohibit discrimination in wages between males and females because women continue to suffer the consequences of inequitable pay differentials; and

WHEREAS, May 11, 2000 symbolizes the day on which the wages paid to American women so far in 2000, when added to women's earnings for all of 1999, finally equal the 1999 earnings of American men; and

WHEREAS, Differentials in wages based on sex constitute an unfair method of compensation, prevent maximum utilization of available labor resources, and prevent females from achieving economic self-sufficiency; and

WHEREAS, Differentials based on sex reveal that Nebraska's working women earn 71 cents compared to each dollar a man earns; and

WHEREAS, Fair pay strengthens the security of families today and enhances the Nebraska economy.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the Commissioners and Staff of the Nebraska Equal Opportunity Commission hereby recognize May 11, 2000 as EQUAL PAY DAY, and hereby acknowledge and encourage employers to effectuate a concerted effort to raise the wages of women to that of men throughout Nebraska.
