The International Association of Official Human Rights Agencies (IAOHRA), at its 55th Annual Conference in Fort Worth, Texas, on July 19, 2003 adopted Resolution #7.  This Resolution is designed to encourage member agencies to participate in the 40th anniversary of the march in Washington, DC.  There will also be other events planned for August 23, 2003 and we encourage individuals to participate in whatever way they can.

Adopted by The International Association of Official Human Rights Agencies

55th Annual Conference, Forth Worth, Texas

July 19, 2003

Title:  40th Anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington, D.C.

Purpose:  To Commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the March on Washington, D.C. and Encourage Member Agencies to Participate in Anniversary Events

WHEREAS, the International Association of Official Human Rights Agencies (IAOHRA) is a professional association of more than 143 national, provincial, state, and local human rights and human relations commissions that has as its purpose and jurisdiction the elimination of discrimination; and,

WHEREAS, the "March on Washington, D.C." on August 28, 1963 was a historic event in protesting the civil rights violations and abuses that were occurring at that time; and,

WHEREAS, the "March on Washington, D.C." made a significant contribution to the enactment of federal civil rights legislation protecting persons from discrimination; and,

WHEREAS, August 28, 2003 represents the 40th Anniversary of the 1963 "March on Washington, D.C.;" and,

WHEREAS, commemorative events are planned for August 23, 2003 in Washington, D.C.;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that IAOHRA endorses this commemorative event and encourages its member agencies to participate.
